What’s the Ocean Action about? Surin Islands & Richelieu Rock are renowned magnets for migrating whale sharks & manta rays. Yet the National Park’s no-fishing zone only extends 3 miles from land and excludes a channel between the parks where fishermen can catch anything, including sharks & rays! There has been a noticeable decline in sharks and rays. But robust data is needed to campaign for expansion and greater policing of the National Park no-fishing zone around whole Surin/ Richelieu area. This project will increase the number of monitoring activities to include monthly trips dedicated to surveying all shark/ ray sightings and fishing boats. It will also involve local Thai/ Moken divers in surveys helping to increase local acceptance of actions driving improved environmental protection of Surin’s valuable natural resources. Working with the Phuket and Bangkok University’s a convincing argument to call for greater expansion and policing of the park will be made.
