Why attend the PADI Business Academy

PADIBusiness Academy Regional Manager Giovanni Cacchione recently joined Bas van Riemsdijk and Marie-Lise Roux to have a chat about their experience at the PADI Business Academy in 2012 and share their successful story.

Bas and Marie currently live in Koh Tao, Thailand. Bas is a PADI Course Director whereas Marie is a Master Instructor. After applying all the knowledge gained at the Business Academy, their website had a growth of 40% for Entry level and ConEd courses and an additional 20% for professional levels.

RM: When did you setup your website and how did the Business Academy effect your bookings?

Marie: We setup the website around August 2011. During the first year, the amount of bookings was quite low; however, after participating to the Business Academy in 2012 we saw an enormous increase of enquiries. Our website started as a simple project, but with the tools that the PADI Staff gave us in Bangkok, we discovered that even a simple website could have a lot of potential. The key of a successful website is to make sure it ranks high in all Search Engines such as Google or Bing, know how to use and integrate all social media platforms and maintain fresh content on a blog.


RM: Did you have a blog when first launching your website?

Marie: We did not have one until 2012. With the support of the PADI staff, we actually started one live at the Business Academy. Now, when I blog, I feel like a kid in a candy shop: I try different keywords, link pictures to our website, and share our stories via Facebook and twitter. After two years, I can say that a blog generates a lot of traffic.


RM: Which are the main Social Media Platforms you rely on?

Marie: We find Facebook incredibly powerful if you know how to use it properly. We gained so many interesting tips at the Business Academy, one for example: how to target specific demographics in order to be more effective and reach potential customers. In addition, we have linked our Facebook business page to Twitter so with one post we update two different platforms!


RM: Is there any areas of your business plan that you are currently working on?

Marie: We want to improve our You Tube channel. A few years ago, I became a professional underwater videographer, the plan is to soon buy a camera and create various marketing videos. Until then we rely on all the PADI videos from the PADI Producer YouTube Channel, which we find very useful.


RM: Is there any tips related to your success you would like to share?

Marie: I would like to say that it is not just about spending hours behind a computer but also about striving for excellent customer service once the client arrives at the dive centre. Following up a booking and making sure our students have an unforgettable experience is our main goal. Finally yet importantly, I would highly recommend taking part in the PADI Business Academy, it definitely helped us grow our business!

2. Add a ‘Join our Dive Crew’ Web Banner to your website

You wouldn’t leave your social media links off your website, so don’t forget about ScubaEarth! It is another way for your customers to actively connect with you. Diver’s are looking for information on where you dive, how often and who with, and ScubaEarth is the perfect place for them to find all of this information.

3. Share your logged dives on your other social media platforms

Don’t forget to cross promote! Make sure you are capturing all of your potential customers by linking your ScubaEarth activity to your other social media platforms. Your Facebook followers also want to know about the dives you are logging, where they are and what you saw!

4. Sign up all your divers after they complete a course with you & have them affiliate with your store

What better opportunity to connect with your customers, than right after they complete a course with you? Have them sign-up for ScubaEarth on the spot and log their training dives, making sure to tag your Dive Shop in each new dive!

New Interactive Map from Project AWARE is the First to Visualize Underwater Trash

PA-LogoAn interactive map launched this week by Project AWARE, a global nonprofit organization, visualizes nearly three years of ongoing reporting by an international network of volunteer scuba divers who remove trash they find underwater through the Dive Against Debris program.

Dive Against Debris empowers scuba divers around the world to remove and report types and amounts of trash they find underwater. The web-based reporting platform enables divers to submit their data and images online. This information is now being shown on the new interactive Dive Against Debris map, shedding light on the growing marine debris problem that remains largely invisible to the wider public.

“Armed with the information, supported by people on the ground, and working in partnerships, we can drive much needed change for the ocean from two directions: bottom up and top down,” said Ania Budziak, Associate Director of Science and Policy for Project AWARE. “Together, we can change what we produce, consume, and how we dispose of our waste. We can also influence policies necessary to improve how waste is managed locally, regionally and globally.”

Our trash does not belong in the environment yet millions of tons of it enter the ocean each year. So far, the number one type of trash reported by Project AWARE divers is plastic – making up nearly 70 percent of the items. These include single use plastics we throw away everyday like bottles and bags that animals mistake for food as well as fishing line and nets that entangle marine life with devastating consequences. The map, which visualizes more than 400,000 items of debris reported so far, underscores why initiatives to reduce waste are so critical.

Project AWARE’s new Dive Against Debris map represents the first opportunity to instantly visualize what is reported and where on a global scale. The organization hopes to use this information to target debris prevention initiatives, reduce the amount of rubbish entering the ocean and ultimately protect wildlife.

“As scuba divers, we’re able to use our unique skills and knowledge to collect data to show the devastating impacts our waste has on life beneath the waves,” said Budziak. “Project AWARE volunteers who remove and report underwater debris are members of a unique community that contribute to a clean and healthy ocean and also inspire us all to make ocean friendly choices every day.”

Bali Crystal Divers – Protecting Our Ocean Planet One Dress at a Time

Bali Crystal Divers hosted a fabulous second hand clothing sale in support of Project AWARE to raise much needed funds for ocean protection.It was chic, funky and eco all the way as well as raising a splendid $1050 AUD.

The second hand, stylish and beautiful clothes were donated by the local expat community in Bali, Indonesia including mens, womens, kids, accessories, bags and much more! This event showcased how to buy less, reuse, recycle, upcycle and have some fun! With the so much pressure facing the resources of our natural planet it’s important to think about our clothes, where they come from, what they are made of, who makes them and the consequences of their production. The textile sector is water intensive and wasteful, so it’s vital we make the most of the current clothing and fibres in existence.

A Second Hand Clothing Sale is a great place to get something new without impacting the environment. “There have bee
n over 10,000 cloth items reported in Dive Against Debris surveys since 2011.  With so much more clothing ending up in landfill finding ways to continually circulate clothing is the best way to go,” said Joanna McNamara Project AWARE.
