29 Nov

self-reliant-diver

With the release of the updated PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course, the PADI Self-Reliant Diver distinctive specialty course is now a standardized PADI Specialty Diver course.

If you are a PADI Self-Reliant Diver Distinctive Specialty Instructor or Trainer, you may qualify to change your rating so that you can teach this new standardised course and allow your divers to credit Dive One as an Adventure Dive.

To change your rating, download the Specialty Change Request Form from the Pros’ Site and submit it to your PADI Regional Headquarters.

You are no longer required to have 25 divers certification to apply for the self-reliant diver specialty instructor rating if you use method 1. (Complete a specialty Instructor course with the PADI Course Director).

You are still required to be at least 18 years old however, and be a PADI Self-Reliant Diver or PADI TecRec Diver, or have a qualifying certification from another training organisation and have 20 logged dives if using method 1 or 2.

The distinctive self-reliant diver specialty instructor guide is now removed from the Pro Site. If you wish to get the newly updated standardised self-reliant diver Instructor guide, it is now available on the online shopping cart; Product code: 70248.

You are also welcome to order it by emailing us on training-sales@padi.com.au.

Welcoming Our Newest PADI AmbassaDivers, Riley and Steve Hathaway

We are thrilled to welcome two new PADI AmbassaDivers to our list of industry leaders and influencers. Steve Hathaway and daughter Riley aim to get kids all over the world enthused about the beauty and diversity of our marine life. Their passion is to create stories that inspire kids to love our ocean. To do so, they created the ‘Young Ocean Explorers’ initiative, consisting of a New Zealand television series and a published book and DVD called ‘Young Ocean Explorers – Love Our Ocean’.

In Young Ocean Explorers, underwater cameraman Steve Hathaway and daughter Riley present a captivating series of stories about what happens when a teenager comes face to face with marine animals. The excellent video footage comes from Steve who has filmed professionally since 2008, providing content for the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery TV. Best known for his excellent orca footage, you’ll find most international orca documentaries in the last 8 years have had Steve’s footage in them, including award winning documentary ‘Blackfish’.

Riley is a passionate 15-year-old ocean ambassador. In 2013, Riley completed a school project on turtles and plastic which was the inspiration behind Young Ocean Explorers. In 2015, Riley was winning awards and seeing herself on national New Zealand television, telling incredible stories of encounters with sea creatures including orca, whales and turtles.

With 20 episodes completed and planning for a third series underway, Riley and Steve have some impressive achievements on their belt already.

  • Young Ocean Explorers videos are currently screening as in-flight entertainment on all Air New Zealand flights.
  • Riley and Steve have given talks to over 20, 000 people in the last year and half, including at TEDx Auckland.
  • They completed their mission to give a free copy of their book and DVD, ‘Young Ocean Explorers – Love Our Ocean’ to every school in New Zealand and the Cook Islands – about 2560 schools!

With a mission to ‘Inspire kids to love our Ocean’ with the world’s best underwater stories, Riley and Steve believe they are working on something powerful enough to change the way kids think about, and treasure our ocean. We at PADI believe they are too, and are proud to be working alongside them to share their message.

“Riley and I are honoured to be accepted into the PADI AmbassaDiver program. We look forward to continuing the promotion of diving and marine education throughout the world and inspiring the next generation of divers” – Steve Hathaway

PADI Freediver Instructor Application Information

9 Nov

Written by PADI Regional Training Consultant, Junya Kato.
junya-kato-freediver

Since the PADI Freediver program launched in November 2015, we have received many PADI Freediver Instructor applications with the programs gaining in popularity around the world.

As a PADI Regional Training Consultant and PADI Professional, I have been engaging in continuing education such as PADI TecRec programs, becoming full trimix diver on both open circuit and closed circuit rebreather, enjoying deep lying wrecks for many years.

I completed the basic PADI Freediver course last year and got hooked with silent diving (different level from CCR silence), and the mental and physical challenges of freediving. Recently, I had an opportunity to complete the PADI Freediver course with Adam Stern, 3 x Australian freediving record holder and PADI Freediving Instructor Trainer. Since then, I have been freediving whenever I have chance! This includes additional training with Hanako Hirose, current Japanese record holder and PADI Master Freediver Instructor in October.
